Volleyball: Gstaad Hosts First 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Grand Slam Stop

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 19, 2006 - The first of four SWATCH-FIVB World Tour grand slam events is next for the world’s best Beach Volleyball players as the Swiss Alps village of Gstaad hosts the first of seven-straight double gender events starting Tuesday with the US$580,000 1to1 Open.

The 1to1 Open is the first SWATCH women’s event in three weeks while the men are in the midst of an 11-week run after starting the season last month in China and visiting Espinho this past week where Germany’s Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann captured the 12th annual Portuguese Open.

The German crown was the second-straight gold medal victory for a tandem from Europe over reigning Olympic champions Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil for a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour title. Two weeks ago in Italy, Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel of Switzerland upset the Brazilians for the gold medal in Roseto degli Abruzzi.

“The Germans played very well, especially Christoph,” said Emanuel, who teamed with Ricardo to win the Croatian gold medal three weeks ago in Zagreb. “They were very aggressive and we had trouble scoring points. We are not playing that bad. Wee have reached all four semi-finals this season. The competition is improving each week as teams are starting to round into shape. Now is the time to start playing well with four grand events in the next seven weeks.”

For the first-time since 2003, four different men’s teams have won SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medals to start the season. Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes, the reigning SWATCH-FIVB World champions, captured the season-opening event in Shanghai. Marcio Araujo and Fabio won two of the first four events in 2005, including their world championship title in Berlin.

The women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour has also featured three different winners to open the 2006 season. Reigning Olympic and World champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States won the last women’s stop in Athens. Brazil’s Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca (Modena, Italy) and China’s Xue Chen/Zhang Xi (Shanghai) captured the first two events.

Brazilians captured both gold medals last June in the Alps as Gstaad hosts the women for the seventh-straight season. Juliana and Larissa defeated China’s Tian Jia and Wang Fei for the 2005 1to1 Open title. May-Treanor and Walsh have won three times in Switzerland (2002, 2003 and 2004). Brazil’s Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede won the first two Gstaad titles and have been on the 1to1 Open podium six times.

The previous five 1to1 Open men’s gold medals have been won by a different team. The 2005 competition featured a Brazilian podium sweep led by Emanuel and Ricardo’s first title in the Alps. Heuscher and Kobel captured the 2005 Gstaad crown. Argentina’s Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde are another Alps gold medal team in the 2006 1to1 Open field.

Following this week’s event, Norway (June 27-July 2) hosts the second SWATCH-FIVB World Tour grand slam stop as the international circuit returns to Stavanger for the eighth-straight year. Other 2006 grand slam stops will be in France (Paris, July 25-30) and Austria (Klagenfurt, August 1-6).
